Omega Planet Ocean 22 SAS Special Edition

SAS Special Air Service

SAS Special Air Service Badge Insignia

Here are some snaps of one of the special edition Omega SAS Planet Ocean watches made especially for Britain’s 22nd Special Air Service (SAS). Rumors of a planned Omega SAS Planet Ocean have been around as early as January 2009, but so far as I’m aware these are some of the first if not the first images that have reached the collector community.

Aside from the caseback engraving they appear to be identical to the regular production retail version of the Planet Ocean.

And once again, the overwhelming majority of the modern “military” Omegas like this are/were purchased out of pocket with private funds by the Troopers themselves and should not be termed “issued.” They are still quite exclusive as they are (usually) only available to the unit that commissions a special caseback design.

These photos were sent along by helpful contributor Mark W. in the UK, who purchased a brand new Planet Ocean that he almost immediately had to send off for warranty service when the observed power reserve was only about 12 hours. After 12 anxious weeks the dealer finally called and said that his watch would be replaced with a new one. Inexplicably Mark was presented with one of these SAS versions. I imagine this did a lot to reduce his anger from having to wait 12 weeks for a brand new watch to be repaired!

Do you know where it is possible to buy these backings for the Seamaster Professional

I expect your UK contributor, Mark, received an SAS version because Omega takes extra care with their quality control on those pieces and knew that Mark would have no problem with it. Considering their quality control on regular Planet Ocean models (Mark’s original experience), Omega wouldn’t dare send the SAS special watches with bad reserves.
